Ok, ok. I freely admit that I wasn’t going into Goseiger with an attitude of “This is gonna rock!” I had watched the first couple episodes and I just couldn’t get into it at all. The characters felt lame, the card stuff seemed like a marketing ploy (more so than the show usually is), and the mecha battles seemed lazy.

But… I’m interested. Very interested.

I’m nine episodes in, and while the villains still seem a bit stupid, the rest of the show has really grown on me. Especially this initial hook with the Skick, Seaick, and Landick tribes. After eight episodes, they had already created 3 forms of GoseiGreat (the “Megazord” of this series), and to my shock and excitement, the three had different abilities and *gasp!* different finishers. For me, finishing moves have been the staple of Power Rangers cheese. A big sword slashes the enemy and the enemy explodes. Seen it a million times and I always knew it was coming. Sure, there might be a new mecha 20 episodes in that has a new power, but they usually just combine it with that season’s “Megazord” and slash with a sword. Shinkenger made sense, it was based on samurai movies and period dramas. The show played up the cliches of that genre, and really took them beyond just being a finisher. But Goseiger just showed fans that just because one finish move might be a sword, that doesn’t mean that it can’t change up it’s attack based on the monster of the week. Watching this more, I hope they take full potential over the series (which is only 18 episodes in, so they have some time to really make some cool new stuff) with both the Rangers and the mecha. It seems like the filler has been creeping in though, but even the filler episodes are still fun to watch.

I still can’t get over the card thing, but hey, I’ll deal with it. I just imagine Alata stepping into battle and yelling:
