Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger – Episode 15: “A Privateer Appears” Review
June 2nd, 2011 |This week on Gokaiger, a new rival threatens the team, with powers that they have never seen before, but may prove useful in finding the greatest treasure in the universe!
Hakase runs down the stairs with the paper, showing the team that the bounty on their heads is now z12,505,000. While Hakase is worried, the others are excited that they are worth that much, and may soon pass another group called the “Red Pirate Gang.” Upon mentioning their name, Marvelous stops what he’s doing. Ahim mentions that Marvelous used to belong to the Red Pirate Gang. Marvelous, however, changes the subject, and asks Navi to look for treasure once again. Navi tells them that danger is approaching, not the result they were expecting, but Marvelous seems excited by it. In space, a ship flies by, and we see a pirate and his servant, a red ape. Oiles Gil notices it, and Barizorg tells him that it’s another pirate, but this one only attacks Zangyack’s enemies. Damaras has a plan however, and keeps to himself.
The team is out looking for something dangerous, and Hakase, not wanting to find it, slips on a banana peel. They wonder if that is what Navi meant, but are called out to by a man looking for “Marvy-chan.” Marvelous calls him out as fooling around, and we are introduced to Basco. Basco is a very eccentric character and he’s portrayed very well, and while both him and Marvelous have similar qualities about them, Basco differentiates from him by being a lot more relaxed and laid back, which is almost intimidating in itself. Basco tells Marvelous that he’s looking for the greatest treasure in the universe, and that he knows it’s on Earth. Marvelous tries to attack Basco, but his servant protects him. As he tries to break through, Damaras sends down a few Sugormins. The Gokaigers call up GokaiGalleon, and fight off the monsters. Here, Basco sees the true power of the Ranger Keys, and is happy that Damaras allowed him to see the great powers.
After the battle, the others ask Marvelous what he knows about Basco. Marvelous tells the, that Basco used to be in the Red Pirate Gang with him, and betrayed both him and their leader, AkaRed. As awesome as AkaRed is, that costume is…eh. The visor is really nice, but the big logo that says “35 V” on it is really pushing it. The three were gathering the Ranger Keys so that they could find the greatest treasure in the universe. However, Basco lured them into a trap, and he stole the Keys from them. After a long battle with Zangyack, AkaRed gave Marvelous the box of keys he had recovered, and saves his life by fighting off the Zangyack force. Unfortunately, Basco had gotten away.
We return to Basco’s ship, where our lively villain is approached by Damaras. Damaras tells him that he’s given him the information, and wants Basco to get rid of the Gokaigers. Basco calls up Marvelous for a duel. It seems Damaras and Basco have been working on this plan from the start, but with Basco somewhat insulting Damaras, there might be some hope for the character. Perhaps the other reason is that Basco had called Marvelous on a Mobirates, so he’s somewhat connected to the Gokaigers, maybe even has powers of his own. Marvelous goes off alone, but the others are concerned. Luka suggests going out as a group, with the chance that they might run into someone. The group agrees.
In an empty landscape, Basco and Marvelous stand off. After exchanging some small talk, Basco tells Marvelous that AkaRed had withheld information from the both of them. He holds in his hand five Ranger Keys: DragonRanger, DekaBreak, TimeFire, KingRanger, and Shurikenger. Throwing them in the air, they fall into a trumpet with five slots. Basco plays the trumpet and the five Rangers pop out. TimeFire opens fire on Marvelous. A five to one battle might not be in Marvelous’ favor, but the other four walk in, saying that they were looking for something dangerous. They transform and fight the five Rangers. This fight is pretty standard, with the handing off of weapons, but then the Rangers find themselves on the losing end of the battle. They take a few hits but come back swinging, Ahim pulling a great move catching DekaBreak’s punch, ducking, and shooting both of her guns, point blank, with one hand straight into DekaBreak’s chest. The first time I went through this episode, I seriously said “OHH!” They take the Rangers out with a final wave, and Marvelous challenges Basco again. Basco smiles, and from behind the Gokaigers we see a handful of other Rangers. In the group are:
- GoseiKnight – Goseiger
- KibaRanger – Dairanger
- MegaSilver – Megaranger
- Both Go-OnWings – Go-Onger
- AbareKiller – Abaranger
- Sparking Silver Wolf – Gaoranger
- BoukenSilver – Boukenger
- ShinkenGold – Shinkenger
- MagiShine – MagiRanger
The Gokaigers try to fight off the 10 other “Sixth Rangers,” but are quickly taken down, having to de-henshin. Basco runs off with four of the five, leaving Marvelous with the five Ranger Keys he started with.
This episode started off kind of slow, but definitely made up for it by the end. This week was a great week for tokusatsu, wasn’t it? Epic cliffhangers on both of the shows I’m reviewing. Basco is a really fun character and plays off of Marvelous well. We get to see more of AkaRed and his backstory, and maybe at some point we’ll learn why his name is Red Red, or why he’s always in a suit not eating any of the spaghetti that Basco had cooked. Also, maybe we’ll find out who it really is under that suit. Basco working with Damaras is still up in the air as being either very predictable or really fun to watch. He can either switch sides and become the sixth ranger, or he can become an even worse threat for the Gokaigers. We’ll just have to wait and see. Overall, this episode was about a 9.5. Really weak opening, but totally worth the watch.

Sally the chimpanzee, and Basco as the privateer.
