Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: Episode 16 “Clash! Sentai vs Sentai”
June 9th, 2011 |Marvelous is hot on the trail to find and rescue his friends, but he can’t track their Mobirates. This entire episode revolves around what Basco had told him at the end of the previous episode, “You have to throw something away to gain something.” He thinks about this for a while, until Basco calls him up, in a friendly, excited tone.
Basco has tied up the group in chains, and he kicks Joe in the face, saying that his leg slipped. He demands the Ranger Keys and the GokaiGalleon, and will return his crew in exchange. Joe tells Basco that Marvelous will never give up his dream of finding the universe’s greatest treasure, as he promised AkaRed that he would do so. Luka tries to fake out Basco by saying that she’ll join him, as Marvelous has obviously given up on them to pursue the treasure. However, Basco pushes her away, saying that there’s nothing to gain from trusting people. He commands Sari, his ape, to throw them in jail. While Hakase believes that Marvelous is on the way to save them, Luka says that they will find a way out of jail before then. Trying to distract Sari, Hakase makes a bunch of ape-like noises, claiming that if Sari thinks that they’re his friends, he’ll help them. This plan works, but not in the way Hakase expected. Sari throws a banana peel in his face and walks off. Joe, motioning to the corner of the cell, shows the team a corridor that they crawl through. Unfortunately waiting at the end of the vent is Basco.
Marvelous looks at his Ranger Keys, and flashes back to when he took on a handful of Zangyacks to find boxes of gold and jewels. He passes them up, but his eye spots the Akaranger key under the gold. AkaRed finds him, and asks him to hand the Ranger Key over. Marvelous tells him no, and tries to fight him off. However, AkaRed is very skilled, and wins the fight. He hands over the Ranger Key, and AkaRed asks him what he is looking for. Marvelous says that if there’s something that is the greatest treasure in the universe, he wants to find it. AkaRed tells him that he’ll never find it if he gives up on it, and takes an amazed Marvelous onto GokaiGalleon. Back in the present, Marvelous thinks of his crew, and how he’s determined to get them back.
Basco throws the team back in jail, with a friendly sign on the vent that says “Keep Out!” Why it’s in English, I’m not sure. He answers a call from Marvelous, and is asked to bring the crew, and he’ll get what he wants. The crew doesn’t understand, as they think that Marvelous will throw away his dream for his crew. Standing off with Basco, Marvelous holds the chest of Ranger Keys. He shows Basco that it is the box, and then tells him that he isn’t giving the keys to Basco, also noting that he’s taking his crew back as well. Basco reiterates that he has to throw away something to gain something, but Marvelous tells him that he’s a pirate, so he’ll take whatever he wants. Marvelous then throws the Ranger keys up in the air, and Hakase catches a Mobirates in his mouth. Joe then catches the ShinkenGreen key the same way, and in a cool scene which will probably be slashed shortly afterwards, Joe places the key in the Mobirates, transforming Hakase into ShinkenGreen. Hakase cuts the chains as Marvelous and Basco fight. The team retrieves their Mobirates, and regroups. Basco is down but not out, and summons ten rangers to fight the Gokaigers. These are the ones who defeated the team last time.
The battle starts, and it’s 2 on 1, and certainly not in favor of the Gokaigers. As Basco tries to take the Ranger Keys, Navi collects them and flies off. The Rangers take on their opponents, and the Gokaigers look like they’ll be defeated again. However, Luka runs off to help Ahim, and with the two of them combining their skills, they take out two at once, and fight the other two. Joe does the same for Hakase, and they take out two more. Marvelous takes out ShinkenGold and the team regroups to finish off the last five with a Final Wave.
Basco releases Water, the Liquidroid, from Sari’s chest to fight the Gokaigers. Right here, the battle takes a turn for the worse. Not really for the Gokaigers, but for the show. This daikaiju battle just feels tacked on, and it’s just proven by the fact that they form ShinkenGokaiOh, and finish it off quickly. Water is no real threat, and was frankly, quite pointless. The episode ends with Marvelous apologizing to his crew for getting them involved with Basco, but the team assures him that they don’t mind, and that they’ll leave only if it gets too boring. Basco sits in his chair, and pulls out 10 more Ranger Keys. From what I can see on the first five, We have Signalman from Carranger, Wolzord Fire from, MagiRanger, Black Knight BullBlack from Gingaman, ShinkenRed (either Kaoru’s suit OR GedouShinkenRed) from Shinkenger, and DekaMaster from Dekaranger. There are five more, but I can only see the backs of them.
This episode was a toss up for me. The action was good, and the comedic bits were funny, but it just felt like it didn’t amount to much. They got more Ranger Keys, but the battle with the Sixth Rangers was short, the battle with the Liquidroid was pathetic, and it just felt like this episode was just a set up for the next one. Judging by the preview, it seems that we get our official 6th ranger next week, and he looks to act a lot like Genta, silly and obnoxious. While I like Genta a lot, we already have Don, so we don’t need two people being over the top silly. In all honesty, this episode really didn’t grab me. I’d rate it a 6.5 on the action and the setup, but everything else was just boring. See you next week!
